How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the box and the numbers above update in real time.
- If you have a length limit, such as for a personal statement, enter it under Target and choose the basis (with spaces, without spaces, or bytes). A bar shows how many characters you have left or how far you are over.
- When you're done, Copy all copies the whole text in one click.
What's the difference between "with spaces" and "without spaces"?
With spaces counts every space and line break as one character. Without spaces is the pure character count with spaces, tabs and line breaks removed. Most job application sites count with spaces, but some contests and assignments count without, so always check the instructions.
How are bytes calculated?
Bytes (CJK = 2) counts Korean, Chinese and Japanese characters as 2 bytes and Latin letters, digits, spaces and basic symbols as 1 byte. This is the legacy convention used by SMS and some Korean job sites. Bytes (UTF-8) is the actual storage size on the web, where one Korean character takes 3 bytes.
How are manuscript sheets and time estimated?
Manuscript sheets are the character count with spaces divided by 200, based on the Korean standard 200-character manuscript sheet (wongoji). On real paper it may come out slightly higher because of paragraph indents and line endings. Reading time assumes about 500 characters per minute and speaking time about 300 characters per minute (without spaces), so both are rough estimates.

The count is slightly different from what the application site shows.
Sites differ in whether a line break counts as 1 or 2 characters and in how they treat special characters. Before you submit, double-check the count shown on that site to be safe.
How are emoji counted?
Each visible emoji counts as one character. Emoji made of several combined code points (for example the family emoji) also count as one.
Is my text stored anywhere?
Your text is never sent to a server. It is kept temporarily in the browser you're using so you can continue later, and it is deleted automatically after 7 days. Pressing Clear deletes it immediately, so be sure to do that on shared computers such as a campus lab PC.
